Scholarships

The Peter O. E. Bekker Memorial Scholarship is offered in memory of the New York Press Club’s longtime Consulting Director, who died in August of 2016, following a valiant battle with cancer.

Peter’s family has created a scholarship fund to aid young journalists. Two awards will be presented to students of journalism at the Conference on Journalism on September 7, 2019.

APPLICATION PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED

Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship applications will open in the summer of 2019.

The scholarships honor pioneer broadcast newsman, Stan Brooks, who died in December 2013, ending a 40-year career at the nation’s first all-news radio station, 1010 WINS. Stan was a long-time member and officer of the New York Press Club.

The Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship is intended to be general purpose and is awarded based upon aptitude and accomplishment as determined by a New York Press Club Foundation committee of professional journalists.

The Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually. To apply, student members of the New York Press Club need only complete and submit the application. (A link to the application will be available here when the entry period begins.)

Requirements for applicants:

  • Must be a student member in good standing of the New York Press Club.
  • Must be in (or entering) a graduate or undergraduate journalism or communications program at an accredited school.
  • Must fully complete and submit the online application.
  • Must provide at least one example of journalistic accomplishment (see application form).
  • Must attend, without charge, the Foundation’s fall journalism conference to receive the award.

Questions may be directed to the New York Press Club at mailbox@nypressclub.org.

The Jordan Schuman Memorial Scholarship is under development. Jordan was raised on Long Island. She died, at 22, in an automobile accident in North Carolina the Wednesday before Christmas, 2015. The crash happened only months after Jordan began her professional career as a multimedia reporter for WPDE-TV in Florence, South Carolina.

Her immediate and extended families have organized a scholarship fund to aid budding journalists.  As soon as program details are finalized applications will be available here.
