Scholarships

The Peter O. E. Bekker Memorial Scholarship is offered in memory of the New York Press Club’s longtime Consulting Director, who died in August of 2016, following a valiant battle with cancer.

Peter’s family has created a scholarship fund to aid young journalists.

Congratulations to the 2019 award winners, Sarah Spoon and Leo DeLuca, both journalism students at Columbia University.

Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship applications will open in the summer of 2019.

The scholarships honor pioneer broadcast newsman, Stan Brooks, who died in December 2013, ending a 40-year career at the nation’s first all-news radio station, 1010 WINS. Stan was a long-time member and officer of the New York Press Club.

The Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship is intended to be general purpose and is awarded based upon aptitude and accomplishment as determined by a New York Press Club Foundation committee of professional journalists.

The Stan Brooks Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually. To apply, student members of the New York Press Club need only complete and submit the application. (A link to the application will be available here when the entry period begins.)

Requirements for applicants:

  • Must be a student member in good standing of the New York Press Club.
  • Must be in (or entering) a graduate or undergraduate journalism or communications program at an accredited school.
  • Must fully complete and submit the online application.
  • Must provide at least one example of journalistic accomplishment (see application form).
  • Must attend, without charge, the Foundation’s fall journalism conference to receive the award.

Questions may be directed to the New York Press Club at mailbox@nypressclub.org.

Thank you for your interest in the Jordan Schuman Scholarship, which was established to help educate and assist both student and fledgling journalists, helping them reach their greatest professional potential.

In 2021, the fund intends to provide a variety of scholarships, grants, and other financial assistance in service of that goal.

Your support, in memory of Jordan, is most appreciated.
