New York Press Club Remembers Rev. Joseph O’Hare, S.J

Rev. Joseph O’Hare, S.J., former president of Fordham University and, for years, New York Press Club Chaplain, passed on Sunday, March 29. Father O’Hare, 89, was also a journalist who served as editor in chief of America Magazine, the Jesuit publication, from 1975 to 1984. A native of the Bronx and the son of a New York City Police Officer, Father O’Hare attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine grammar school and Regis High School. He was also a longtime missionary in the Philippines and studied for the priesthood there at Ateneo de Manila University. Having later earned a doctorate in philosophy at Fordham, Father O’Hare was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and chair of the NYC Campaign Finance Board.
