New York Press Club Annual Conference on Journalism 2025 to Focus on Critical Challenges for Journalists
Keynote Speaker will be Margaret Sullivan
Margaret Sullivan, executive director of the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at the Columbia Journalism School, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s New York Press Club Conference on Journalism, Saturday, November 1, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, at the Law School at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus. Her keynote address will be moderated by Michael Calderone, Media Editor at The Wrap.
This year’s conference will focus on the critical challenges faced by journalists today, including infringement on Freedom of the Press.
Also part of the day’s program will be the opening plenary session entitled, “Threats to Democracy,” featuring moderator Jeff Jarvis, creator of the weblog, BuzzMachine; David Enrich, author and New York Times editor; George Freeman, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center, and Molly Jong-Fast, author, columnist and political analyst.
Additional break-out panel discussions include the following:
- Practical AI for Journalists: How to Use it Without Losing Your Compass with moderator George Bodarky, Reporter and Trainer, NPR; Jonathan Soma, Columbia School of Journalism, Sisi Wei, editor-in-chief, The Markup, and Rubina Fillion, associate editorial director, AI Initiatives, The New York Times.
- Podcasting: A How-To featuring moderator Steve Kastenbaum, CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism; Harry Siegel, The City; Christopher Werth, WNYC, Dexter Henry, New York Post/Sportsnet New York and Ben Max, Max Politics and New York Law School.
- Covering Climate in the Eye of the Storm with Colin Kinniburgh of New York Focus, Cara Buckley of The New York Times, Mark Hertsgaard of Covering Climate Now, and moderator Jason Frazer of Drizzle Weather.
- Marching With the Masses: How to Cover Protests and Stay Safe While Doing It with Dean Moses, AM NewYork; Stephanie Keith, freelance photographer; Oliya Scootercaster, FNTV, and moderator Robin Shannon of WFUV Radio.
There will also be a tutorial entitled “The Write Stuff: Five Simple Tricks to Improve Your Storytelling” presented by veteran investigative journalist Brad Hamilton of the Hatch Institute, who is president of the Institute for Storycraft and Information Gathering.
Margaret M. Sullivan is columnist for the Guardian US and the executive director of the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at Columbia Journalism School. She was the longest serving public editor at The New York Times and the first woman in that role.
The day-long conference begins with a continental breakfast at 8:30 am and continues with the plenary session, break-out sessions, tutorial, a hot lunch and the keynote. The location is the Fordham University School of Law, 150 W 62 St. in Manhattan. The cost is: $50 for non-members and $40 for members. There is also a student price of $20.
