Where to GO When You Have to GO.

October 27th, 2008 Heather Kovar

How many times have you been out on a story, in an unfamiliar area, and find yourself needing a restroom?

SitorSquat.com is a website that will find toilets for you across the globe.

It even has an IPhone app so you can access the service when you need it.

I checked out my neighorhood. Who knew there were three self-enclosed toilets upstairs behind the organic food section at Fairway? (Whatever self-enclosed means.)
The review for the restroom at Zabar’s reads: Clean and rarely occupied bathroom upstairs on the 2nd floor housewares mezzanine. It’s in the far left back corner of the pots and pan section.
It’s not just grocery stores. So give your area a whirl.

Should Journalists Blog?

October 20th, 2008 Heather Kovar

My friend Ethan, who is a manager at CBS Mobile News, was on a panel last week that dealt with how technology has changed the way news is gathered and consumed.

In his live journal blog, he writes of the sentiment of a gentleman who runs a hyper-local website, that “journalists should not blog.”
His rationale is that blogs are too open a forum, and journalists will share their opinion and thus compromise their future coverage.

Ethan says he cross-examined that man’s views, and even sited one of my blogs.

Let me know what you think about journalists blogging. You can do so anonymously. Or send me your blog, I’ll add it to the blog roll.

VP Debate – Now Donate

October 3rd, 2008 Heather Kovar

Soon after the VP Debate was over, just like following the first Presidential debate, the candidates’ camps sent out emails to supporters with a response and a plea to make a donation.

Governor Sarah Palin’s arrived in my inbox first, hers beginning with a reference to the media.
” In the weeks since I joined John McCain as his running mate, the Obama-Biden Democrats have used their allies in the liberal media to paint us negatively, all in an attempt to sway undecided voters. Tonight’s debate gave me the opportunity to bypass the biased media filter and communicate our shared values of reform directly to the voters.”

Senator Joe Biden’s mesage began with why McCain/Palin is more of the same. “She couldn’t identify a single area where she or John McCain would change George W. Bush’s economic or foreign policy positions.”
The full text of both emails follow beginning with Palin.

GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN:
Dear Supporter,

In the weeks since I joined John McCain as his running mate, the Obama-Biden Democrats have used their allies in the liberal media to paint us negatively, all in an attempt to sway undecided voters. Tonight’s debate gave me the opportunity to bypass the biased media filter and communicate our shared values of reform directly to the voters.

I know millions were watching as I went toe-to-toe against Senator Biden to explain our plans. Reform Republicans will strengthen the economy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and secure our nation from the threat of Islamic extremism.

As we head into the final month of the campaign, I’m asking you to ensure we have the resources necessary to compete with the Obama-Biden Democrats and their liberal media allies in races across the country. You can help today by giving your financial support right now.

The stakes are extremely high and voters are already casting their ballots for the general election. You may have heard the media reports out of Ohio about same-day registration and voting. The Obama-Biden Democrats and their allies are exploiting loopholes in Ohio election laws that we fear may result in unqualified voters casting ballots. They’re also hoping our voters will be so confused, that they will throw up their hands in frustration and stay at home instead of voting. That’s why it’s important to re-double our efforts.

The Democratic Secretary of State in Ohio even tried to disqualify thousands of Republican absentee ballot applications. She enlisted the help of liberal partisan friends and special interest groups when we challenged this in court. Thankfully, we were successful in taking the case all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court and won the right to reinstate these absentee ballot applications. The Obama-Biden Democrats will likely try this shameful, partisan tactic in other targeted states. They’ll do anything to win this election.

We’re heading into the critical weeks when many undecided voters will make their choice. Our team needs to get our message out to these crucial voters who can tip the scales in our favor. Your generous contribution of $25, $50, $75, $150, $250, $500 or more will help our team reach these voters.

You donation to McCain-Palin Victory 2008 funds our critical get-out-the-vote efforts in states all across the country. These efforts will be critical in defeating the shameful tactics the Obama-Biden Democrats are employing. Will you help get-out-the-vote for our entire team by making a donation right now?

I want to sincerely thank you for your generosity. Anything you can do to help today will go a long way to securing Victory on November 4th.
Sincerely,
Governor Sarah Palin
P.S. The Obama-Biden Democrats will do anything to win. Their allies are already hard at work employing shameful election tactics in Ohio and they won’t stop there. We’re in the final stretch of the campaign and need your immediate financial support to elect our ticket from top to bottom on Election Day. Please join our team for victory today!

SENATOR JOE BIDEN:

heather,

If you saw tonight’s debate, you saw Governor Sarah Palin give a spirited defense of the same disastrous policies that have failed us for the past eight years.

She couldn’t identify a single area where she or John McCain would change George W. Bush’s economic or foreign policy positions.

If you want something different, Barack and I need your help.

Make a donation of $5 or more right now to bring about the change we need.

The change we need is fixing this broken economy from the bottom up — not tax breaks for the wealthy and huge corporations that ship U.S. jobs overseas. We need to focus on defeating al Qaeda and the Taliban and restoring America’s standing in the world — not an unending commitment in Iraq.

Let’s be clear: Governor Palin and Senator McCain are offering nothing but more of the same failed Bush policies at home and abroad, trying to disguise them in the rhetoric of change.

Americans need real solutions and real change.

We’re in this together and there’s a lot to do before Election Day. Please make a donation of $5 or more right now to support this campaign for change:

https://donate.barackobama.com/changeweneed

This is the most important presidential election you’ll be part of in your life.

Thank you for all that you’re doing.

Now let’s get to work and change this country,

Joe

Return of the U.S.S. Intrepid

Coast Guard Cutter Seneca

COMING HOME–The U.S.S. Intrepid, New York’s own floating Sea-Air and Space Museum, returned home today to it’s Pier 86 berth after an almost two-year refurbishment in Bayonne. Check out it’s spanking new coat of Navy gray.

Intrepid and escorts move up-river

A special NYFD welcome

Coming Out of Its own Plumes

Led by the Coast Guard Cutter Seneca and surrounded by a flotilla of pleasure boats, police and fire boats and auxiliary CG craft, the Essex-Class WW2 carrier was towed from Staten Island to it’s permanent Hudson River pier which has also undergone a big face-lift. A few more touches, and the public will be welcomed aboard in early November.

Moving Towards Midtown!

The Intrepid, an 892-foot-long vessel, which once had a crew of almost 3,500, is a battle-tested veteran of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and survived kamikaze attacks and other Japanese bombardment. It later saw action in Vietnam and was in on the space shuttle recovery of the Mercury and Gemini programs. Decommissioned in March 1974, volunteer efforts ultimately saved it to become one of New York’s most popular attractions as of 1982. Instead of the 80-plane battery it once carried, the Intrepid’s flight deck now has a huge exhibit of aviation history, including, the A-12 Blackbird spy plane, a Russian Mig, and other American and foreign craft. The supersonic Concorde is also part of the complex.

Shea and Yankee Stadium Memories

October 1st, 2008 Heather Kovar

Remember back in June of 2004 when the Yanks decided to sell Crunch ‘n Munch instead of Cracker Jacks? Of course fan outcry led to the return of the original within a month.

I’m looking to compile memories of Shea and Yankee stadiums.

Please send in your pictures and stories.
